| Geru is a 37’ Prout Snowgoose cruising catamaran, built by G. Prout & Sons Ltd in Canvey Island, UK. Geru has a mast height just under 50' she fits nicely under all ICW bridges while drawing just under 3'of water she's perfect for that shallow water cruising. With a 15’ beam, she is just narrow enough to fit in a standard slip, unlike larger cats. What does SV Geru stand for ? SV Geru stands for : Sailing Vessel GEoff and RUth. Many people when cruising are known by their boat names, so we thought this way our names might get remembered too ;) |  |
History
We are the fourth owners of Geru. She was originally named SIDAWAY owned by Sid Burchell. Sid was quite involved with Prout in the construction of SIDAWAY. Sid single-handed her from England to Brazil. There he married and brought the boat and his new wife north to Florida. Unfortunately his wife was prone to seasickness and Sid reluctantly sold the boat in 1989.
He was very involved with Prout's building of the boat. He was there regularly and the Prout people actually helped him name the boat Sidaway. He had been divorced and his dream was to sail around the world. He left England as a singlehander and sailed down to Brazil. In Brazil he fell in love with a local girl. They married and began sailing up the island chain. Unfortunately she was constantly sea sick. When they got to Florida he realized that she could not tolerate living on the boat, so he put it up for sail.
SIDAWAY was then renamed WILDCAT by Pam and Chris Wild and used for summer vacations and weekends for two years. They then extensively refitted the boat and took a year off to sail with their 11 year old son in 1992-3.
In 2000 Pam and Chris sold WILDCAT to Morris as they found they weren't (they have since bought a Lagoon 380 and traveled the Caribbean extensively). Morris had the dream to sail around the world, but met his partner who wasn't comfortable on the boat.
We bough WILDCAT and rename her Geru in the summer of 2006.
